Most visitors to the area will land at Malaga International Airport. A pleasant and scenic route to the DONA ANA residential development is along the coastal road passing through Nerja, Almunecar, Motril and on to Adra. Here we turn inland and head for the Sierra Nevada National Park. On the fringe of the park is the little village of Picena. DONA ANA is a few minutes walk from the village.
Our journey from the airport has taken under than 3 hours. Almeria Airport is much closer but there are fewer flights from the U.K.
Picena is a typical white pueblo - undoubtedly of Moorish origin.
An ancient church overlooks Picena - which is surrounded by olive and almond groves.
In the distance the foothills of the Sierra Nevada provide the backdrop. The region is known as Las Alpujarras and is the ‘real Spain’. Once the home of the famous hispanophile Gerald Brennan - who lived in the area in the 1940’s and 50’s - much can learned of life in these little villages from his book ‘South from Granada’.
Picena has a few small shops and the ubiquitous selection of bars and restaurants. Friendly Spanish country folk make up the population - many of them working in the olive and almond groves that surround the village.
DONA ANA is suitable for those seeking a relaxing stress free holiday or quiet retirement in a scenically magnificent location. Serious shoppers and culture lovers will want to visit the regions capital - historic Granada.
The beachside holiday resorts of Roquetas de Mar, Almeria and Adra can be reached in about an hour. During the winter months the ski slopes of Sol y Nieve and Puerto Ragua are not too far away and offer every type of snow sport.
