The spa of Heviz can be reached by car in 5 minutes and the town of Kesthely (situated right on the Balaton-lakeside) in only 8 minutes’ drive. There is a public busstop within 2 minutes’ walking distance.
General information:
Lake Balaton is Europe’s largest sweet water-lake (75 km long, 5-13 km wide) and is therefore also known as the “hungarian seaâ€. The pleasant water temperatures and the mediterranean climate in the area attract a lot of tourists and enthusiasts of watersports during summertime.
The town Kesthely and the well-known spa Heviz are situated on the southwest end of the lake Balaton. Due to its traditional and cultural life (e.g. music-festival and cultural events in Festetic-castle) Kesthely has the proud title of being the “Capital of Balatonâ€. The true meaning of the town of Heviz, however, was gained through the healing benefits of its thermal springs and its natural thermal lake making Heviz a famous spa. The Heviz-lake is the largest of its kind in the world, 4.4 hectares in size. It guarantees all year round bathing as water temperature in summer can reach 35° C and does not drop below 23° C in the wintertime.
The “miraculous healing effects†of Heviz springs were already discovered by the Romans and still nowadays attract many international visitors.
The whole area around Heviz will gain of an enormous upswing in the coming months and years due to important improvements in (touristic) infrastructure and the economic benefits gained by international investments and joint-ventures. Since 2006 Ryanair, Lufthansa and several European charter-carriers are serving the destination regularly from the recently built airport “Flybalaton†(15 km outside of Heviz). Only 16 km away from Heviz an exclusive international golf-centre (Irish-Hungarian cooperation “www.zalasprings.comâ€) is being built.
