The white-sand beaches, green and blue sea and quaint houses and streets make for picture postcard scenery that would probably look unreal even on a postcard. In fact, to a lot of people, Sal is the Caribbean minus the throngs of too many tourists.
Sal is part of the Cape Verde municipality, and is almost entirely at sea level. The island’s highest point, in fact, is Monte Grande, at a height of 406 m. And you may think we’re joking, but Sal gets sunlight for about 350 of the 365 days of the year, and the winds are almost always temperate. So the tourists do come here, but the teeming crowds are absent.
